….With The Bathwater!

The term: “Don’t Throw The Baby Out With The Bathwater” means avoiding discarding something good whilst trying to eliminate something that’s not good.

In other words, when trying to correct an error, don’t damage the good bit.

In terms of your online business, you will have experienced many things in terms of knowledge gained; what works and what doesn’t work; software you’ve bought that is no longer relevant….or still collecting dust on your hard drive, and so on.

Basically, you’ve gone through – and still are going through – changes that impact upon yourself as well as your business.

That’s normal, but it’s easy to beat yourself up over the things that haven’t worked out, and the (very) many set-backs you’ve incurred along the way.

So, as you continue on your online business journey, and reflect on what works and doesn’t work, it’s easy to discard those areas that you know don’t work, or are no longer relevant.

What you don’t want to do, though, is totally dismiss the lessons you’ve learnt along the way.

For example, you may have been working on a project for someone for little or no remuneration in return, simply because it was a great opportunity for you to apply your new skills and knowledge so as to get practical experience.

Now, there’s every chance that you encountered unforeseen issues as you got to grips with the work, such as communication issues, such as:-

• Technical issues
• Misunderstanding of what’s required of you
• Lack of urgency to respond to your questions – because you’re doing work for free.

And there’s bound to be other similar-type problems you encounter, depending on the work – and the people – involved.

There’s a fair chance you’ve spent hours and hours on the project, all with the best of intentions to help and please the other party.

Until one day you’re told by the other party that they’ve “found someone else” to do the work for them instead, citing the reason as being along the lines of what you produced for them wasn’t quite what they wanted!

It doesn’t matter what excuse they give, the end result is the same – the end of that project!

Now, it’s easy to start a pity party and throw your toys out of the pram. You might even think that this web-site building lark doesn’t work; or you’re the worst Facebook page developer in the world; or your online business doesn’t work.

Whatever the project entailed, you must look at the positives.

Yes, it’s a big disappointment to be “rejected”. But so bloody what!

You’ve obtained great experience from what works and what doesn’t. You’ve been able to implement what you’ve learned from the numerous online courses you’ve spent hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on, so here’s what you do:-

• Carry on what you’re doing!
• Find new projects.
• Charge for those new projects.

Yes….your next project that you take on you must charge for, because not only have you gone through the pain of putting yourself and your business into the position it is now, but it will make the other party realise that you have something of value to offer – that they have to respect.

No, it’s not going to necessarily make life easier for you. It may even make it harder at the beginning, but at least the other party now recognises that you won’t produce anything for them unless you get paid for it.

So, just because you have a set back or two (and there’s likely to be a lot more), you don’t discard all the good bits you’ve learnt and implemented along the way. You re-assess, build on what works, and learn from your mistakes.

Hence, don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater!
